About the College

Divekar College of Commerce has been a unique institution since its inception. It was founded in June 1970 by the Kanara Welfare Trust to offer quality commerce education.

It was the first college in Karwar offering commerce education. The College was named after Dr. M. R . Divekar, a great Philanthropist who donated liberally for the establishment of the college.

The College was established according to the high standards and lofty ideals followed and set by Dr. Dinakar Desai, a great Visionary, Educationist and founder of the Kanara Welfare Trust that runs it.

Origin

Divekar College of Commerce has been a unique institution since its inception. It was founded in June 1970 by the Kanara Welfare Trust to offer quality commerce education to needy students in and around Karwar, a port city in the forest district of Uttara Kannada. It was the first college in Karwar offering commerce education. It should also be noted that there was only one commerce college in the entire Uttara Kannada district before the establishment of Divekar College of Commerce. The College was established according to the high standards and lofty ideals followed and set by Dr. Dinakar Desai, a great visionary, poet, Statesman, a fighter for justice for the poor riots, a great educationist and founder of the Kanara Welfare Trust that runs it. Dr. Dinakar Desai, the president of Mumbai Branch of Servants of India Society, founded the Kanara Welfare Trust and went on establishing educational institutions (High Schools) in the remote and backward parts of Uttara Kannada district for improving the living standards of people by education and social service. The institutions run by the KWT have made their mark in their respective fields on the educational map of the district. It has been the constant endeavor of the KWT to provide quality education in its institutions. It is committed to providing adequate infrastructural facilities and human resources like qualified teaching and administrative staff, spacious and functional teaching blocks, and other amenities. The College was named after Dr. M. R . Divekar, a great Philanthropist who donated liberally for the establishment of the college. Divekar College of Commerce is located on the most beautiful campus that is surrounded by the perennial dark green Sahyadri or the Western Ghat Forests, the blue water of the Arabian Sea, and the Kali River. The sun rising in the Sahyadri and setting in the Arabian Sea creates a myriad of colors on and around the campus.

The Growth

Divekar College of Commerce grew by leaps and bounds since its inception. Beginning with a modest strength of 150 students, the college had the composite strength of more than 700 students for over two decades before it was bifurcated into Pre-University and Degree Colleges in 2oo1-02. The College was run in a private building at the beginning. The foundation stone for an independent college building and campus was laid on a five-acre plot in 1971. The KWT built a simple but magnificent building within a year. Since then the college has been achieving all-round progress. Prof. G. V. Bhat, the founder principal of the college dedicated his mind and body, heart, and soul for the establishment and development of the college. The College could have a deep and far-reaching image under his able leadership – both academic and organizational. Prin. G. V. Bhat was assisted ably by Prof. S. N. Nayak who became the principal of the college after the retirement of Prin. G. V. Bhat in 1994. The College management has provided adequate infrastructural facilities such as an independent library building, auditorium, playground, canteen building, principal’s quarters, the guest house, etc and maintained the policy of non – interference in the day – to – day academic administration. Shri. S. P. Kamat, an eminent lawyer, noted philanthropist and educationist, managing or associated with many educational and social service organizations is the Chairman of the KWT and also the Governing Body of the college. Shri. S. P. Kamat the Chairman has been a source of inspiration for the staff and students for the constant pursuit of excellence. He keeps visiting the college and enlightening students with his vision and ideas.

The Glory

The College has been known for its amazing performance in both academic and extra-curricular activities. It has secured ranks at degree examinations of Karnatak University, Dharwad for around the last five decades. Our alumni hold prestigious positions in the government and public limited companies, Indian and foreign banks, and insurance corporations. They have made their names in professional fields like legal, chartered accountancy, cost accountancy, taxation, teaching, management and entrepreneurship, and other fields. The excellence in the fields of curricular and extracurricular activities is attributed to excellent, highly qualified, meritorious, dedicated and committed teaching staff, administrative staff, and the management. The members of the teaching staff of the college are creative and innovative. They have published books and articles, rendered consultancy services freely, and acted as visiting faculty members. Our teaching faculty comprises rank-holders, first classes, Ph. D, M. Phil, NET, and KSET.

Organisation and Management

The College administration has the hierarchy of the Kanara Welfare Trust, Governing Body of the College, Principal, Heads of the Departments, Teaching staffs, Office Superintendent, other administrative and non-teaching staff. There are secretaries elected from among students by students for the smooth conduct of extracurricular activities of students Union and Gymkhana. Meetings with the members of the enlightened Management, frequent meetings of different departments, feedback from the students, periodical tests, and examinations have enabled us to achieve excellence in all of our endeavors.
